For our Fall fun we took a trip to Bob's Corn Maze with the other Stevens family here in Seattle. Dan's cousin Dave and family joined us for a day full of fun. We walked through a corn maze, the kids rode on the cow train and we ate roasted peaches with ice cream and roasted corn by the pumpkin patch. We stayed 'til it got a little late and I ran out of time to go home and get changed so I went to the Women's Conference in jeans. When President Monson talked about judgment and clothes, there was a long whisper from my row of friends to me and we all had a good laugh at what I was wearing.
Our highlight the last 2 weeks is probably General Conference. We watched the Saturday session at home and in between the sessions we went to the Salmon Day Festival. There were so many people there and they had a lot of things to do. The kids enjoyed watching all the salmon swimming upstream. Then for the Sunday afternoon session, we got together with Dave's family again and enjoyed it together with games and dinner following conference. We also found out that we had missed the biggest Lego convention of the year called Brick Con that Reena would've loved so much. Now we have to watch for it next year!
Many of you know that Seattle is known for having some of the best places to eat. One of Dan's friends came up for a work convention and ate at a famous restaurant in Issaquah. We decided last Saturday that we would try this restaurant. We went there and saw that each plate was about $35 each so we opted for the Chinese restaurant next door. Still good food and we even got to try fresh hand tossed noodles!
I sang another solo at church the week after we got back from Philly, which marked my 5th solo this year and the next day the music coordinator called me and asked if I have anything else scheduled for the next few months. I simply just answered no and left it at that and went on talking about other great voices in the ward, like my husband's. The words got out to our other friends that Dan has a good rock star voice and now Dan is in a band. Yippy! We went to a concert and saw Crash Kings, Civil Twilight, and Anberlin. The next day the people in his band all got together and jammed. He had a great time and I'm excited to see him have an opportunity to share his talents.
Before we left for Philly, my boss from the House of Hope gave me an iPhone with free service and everything paid for. At first I couldn't accept it but he said it was a gift for my service and it has all of the songs he wrote and wanted me to learn so I accepted. Just an update, we can't live without the thing now.
The appearance of the iPhone in our house stirred up some desires to buy toys. Dan finally broke down and bought a kindle. He did some calculations on the costs that would add up if he buys all of the books he wanted and found out that he could get hundreds of public domain books for free with a kindle so there you go, his reasoning won and he now reads his novels and scriptures on a device that is thinner than any book we own in this house! It is so cool.
Brie's hair is finally getting long enough for little piggy tails. She is also in love with Barney and that's my trick for tying up her hair.
We love Seattle and are loving our life. Each day I look forward to putting on my status on facebook something new and fun. A friend of mine noticed that and suggested I keep a record of my facebook statuses for our blog and journal. He's so right about this being fun to go back and read. Here are some that are most memorable.
1. No matter how much sibling rivalry is going on, everything stops when Barney's I Love You song is on and is replaced with hugs and kisses.
2. My work out today involved running around the house with my children and having them try to catch me for 20 minutes. Best work out ever!
3. A green crayon got mixed in our load of laundry (I wonder how that happened) and got Reena's dance clothes all stained. Don't know what creative things I need to do to take that off.
4. I woke up this morning to my daughter shouting from downstairs "how many minutes do I put this oatmeal in for?" Love it when they wake up and make their own food. I also found out that the microwave while it's on slows down your wireless internet.
5. It's only barely 10:00 in the morning and so far we've spilled 2 things. Oatmeal and hot chocolate all over the floor. I'm clean in the acts. Anybody keeping score?
6. Wednesday is now my favorite day of the week. I teach preschool at the House of Hope and it's also when I get to visit the homeless and touch lives and feel not so self centered.
The little things in life are sometimes the most fun and memorable.
